Tips on a Tuesday

Hello folks.

First of all, THANK YOU for such a great turnout for my first contest. Entries will be accepted until 11:59 pm est tonight. Margaret will announce a winner Friday. So stay tuned. 😀

Now back to our regularly scheduled program. haha.
I gave a way to check up on yourself by listening the other day when I suggested you read your manuscript out loud. I’m also a visual person. :DDDDDDD and I like to “see” how things are working or laid out. Most of you know what I’m talking about. You read a recipe and follow directions, but it doesn’t turn out right. BUT when you “watch” someone prepare the dish something clicks! POW! Light Bulb goes off! AHHHHHHHHHH!
Well. If you are more visual trying doing this:

Print off your manuscript and gather some different colored highlighters together.
Now the fun part. Designate each color for a certain act. Yellow for speaking. Pink for visual actions. Blue for background details…. you get the idea.

When you get done marking up your ms you can actually SEE when YOU are talking to much. When you main characters need to have more meat to back up what they are saying or doing. When you should be doing more showing than telling. If you have a large chunk of one color, maybe you need to break it up. OR…OR…OR…OR…OR…OR…OR…maybe you need to see where you need that big chunk of text to build up for a climax.

In any situation, the use of colorful highlighters will help you see how your ms is flowing.

I hope this tip comes in handy and gets your ms to flow.
Good luck!
