#MarketingMonday – Reciprocity

Marketing can be daunting to say the least. I mean who wants to sit there and feel like they are bashing others over the head saying things like: “Buy my (insert product)!” “Watch this video!” “Have you seen this?” and yadda yadda on and on. No one, that’s who! It’s the down side of putting your products and yourself out there.

People ain’t got time for all that stuff!


So what can you do? One thing I have found more beneficial than anything else is RECIPROCITY! Or promoting others.

Reciprocity:   a social norm of responding to a positive action with another positive action, rewarding kind action

Yes, talk about other people in your field. Let them know what they say matters. Let them know that you find their post intriguing. Let them know that you think they are important in your field.

HOW can you do this?

  • LIKE what they say.
  • COMMENT on their posts. Ya know, be interactive on social media. ***cough, cough. SOCIAL-IZE! cough, cough***
  • REBLOG, RETWEET, SHARE what they have to say. Spread the word! Give them some link-y love!!!


As you do this you will accomplish several things:

  • Getting great content out into the world.
  • Getting your name noticed by the poster. They notice who does this… trust me!
  • Having your followers trust you for great content.
  • Building your brand.

And guess what happens when you do this regularly??? People will start LIKING your posts. They will start COMMENTING on your posts. They will start SHARING, REBLOGGING, and RETWEETING what you have to say. You will see it come full-circle. Ya know, the whole “what goes around, comes around” kind of thing.  😉   Will it happen over night? No. Building trust and loyalty takes time. You will have to work at it. But it will happen!

There are several ways to find great content too…

  1. READ. Do a search and see what you can find.
  2. FOLLOW others on the interweebs. See what they have to say!
  3. SIGN UP for blog post notifications. This way you will be able to read posts and easily share what you will.
  4. LOOK at what is trending. See what is popular in your area.

I hope this gives you some ideas on how to begin to market yourself (and others).

Marketing Monday – Social Media Time Suck

I know I’ve gone in depth on the different social media outlets on this board. After all, this is something I use almost daily and part of my business. It is something I believe everyone who owns their own business should use.

The main question is how much time can you devote to it? Social media can be a time suck. There. I said it. HA! But it really can. You go online to do a little research and before you know it, it is a few *cough, cough* hours later and you’re looking a funny cat videos. *I know, I know. They ARE cute.  😉  * That black hole can be tough to pull yourself out of. Then all the ‘extra’ time you’ve had to research, get some new writing done, revise, etc is g-o-n-e!  *head meets desk*  So how can we get better results?

  • Focus
    Decide what you want to accomplish. It can be to separate yourself from another writer. Or separating your name, like I had to, from someone else who is well known. Or you want to build your online presence more. Any number of things. Decide what YOU want to accomplish.
  • Schedule
    Use a calendar and pencil in your agenda. Take it in chunks. 15 min / 30 minute / 1 hour segments are great.
    I began setting a long term goal (what I wanted to accomplish over a year). Then I sat down with my calendar that I made and scheduled what I wanted to accomplish each month. (ex: learn a different social media outlet, use that outlet, become comfortable with that outlet, and decide if I wanted to continue with it.) Then  every Sunday I would pencil in what I was going to do each day that week. I would work on writing/revising a manuscript, blog posts, making videos, updating website, etc. Whatever I needed.
  • Timer
    Make it count and keep yourself accountable. Not only do I schedule the days, I give myself a time limit. Use an egg times, or your microwave, or your phone to keep with the time. Even when you are doing something on your calendar, it can be more in depth than you thought to learn, and before you know it, it will creep into your next appointment on your calendar for the day. I will also highlight things when I’ve completed them. It gives me a sense of accomplishment when I see everything for the week in green. This I found EXTREMELY helpful when working on my platform, because I knew I was doing something. Platform building takes time to build and those green highlights let me know I was trudging along.

Helping authors, illustrators, educators, and parents explore the world of children’s literature.

Several months ago, I highlighted the then soon-to-be-launched website called, KidLit.TV.
(You can review the post, ~ HERE ~.)

Since KidLit.TV’s launch, it has been amazing how the kidlit community has gotten involved with this project. Julie Gribble, founder and president, saw a need for a resource website dedicated to educating people with video. Video is one of the largest way people can market, educate, and gain interest in a product.

Julie started the KidLit. TV Facebook Group Page and encourages people to post their own videos, as well as videos they find beneficial to them as long as it pertains to KidLit. She also asks people who post their own videos to share software, techniques, and tips with the group. This way everyone can learn and improve. The KidLit.TV Facebook Group is now over 1,000 members and is very active.

In November 2014, Julie launched the KidLit.TV website. When you go over there, be prepared to spend some time. There  is a wealth of videos to watch and learn from. You can find everything from book trailers to how-tos, from behind the scenes to exclusive videos produced by NYMW, called StoryMakers, hosted by Rocco Staino.

KidLit.TV also has launched a NEWSLETTER. Where they send updates, highlight events, and share information involving kidlit.

Last month, KidLit.TV Pinterest boards were launched with a party.  There are a variety of boards for you to look through connected to great information and videos! They already have over 250 followers there.

As you can see, KidLit.TV is expanding and gaining recognition in the children’s genre fields.

KidLit.TV continues to share videos to help the community learn and grow. Feel free to join the KidLit.TV Facebook group, follow them on Pinterest, and subscribe to their newsletter.




Julie Gribble is the president of New York Media Works which creates and produces works for children and the children’s literature community in both the United States and Great Britain. She founded KidLit TV to help authors and illustrators broaden their audience by using new technologies to complement and promote their work. KidLit TV is a resource for kid lit creators, industry insiders, booksellers, librarians, teachers, and parents.

Julie is an award-winning writer, screenwriter, filmmaker, and producer. Her charming picture book, Bubblegum Princess, is based on a true story about Kate Middletown and was released on the day the royal baby, who we now know as Prince George, arrived.  Copies of the book have been donated to underprivileged children in the US and to children’s hospices in the UK.

In addition to producing KidLit TV’s original show StoryMakers, Julie is one of the co-producers for Who Killed Nelson Nutmeg, a feature film shot in Dorset, England with Bonnie Wright of Harry Potter fame. Julie sits on the Children’s Committee of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts: BAFTA-NY.

Marketing Monday: BOOKS!


Get Your Products Out There

So you have spent years perfecting your craft.


Taking classes…


Reading books…





FINALLY! A contract and you hold that darling baby in your hands.

So how do you get it into OTHER’S hands?
By marketing. *sigh* Yes, more work. It’s definitely different too. No more solitude. No more pjs and scrunches.
you hafta get out there! Yes, I said hafta!  😉

How to get your books out there?

There are several ways:

  1. Create a launch team
    Have a group of people who are willing to read your story and help spread the word. You can do this by sending them a pdf copy of the book. They will give honest feedback, post a review on Amazon / goodreads / blog / etc. As well as talk about it on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, etc. When a group talks, they create buzz. When there is a buzz, people get curious.
  2. Publishers website
    Your publisher will create a webpage for your book. SHARE IT! What better way to get exposure for you, your book, and the people who believed it would make a great book (a/k/a your publisher).
  3. Your website
    Give your book it’s 15 minutes of fame! It deserves it and so do you! Create a page dedicated to your book. There you can have a large picture, ISBN#, blurb, and links to order. You can also post reviews and a book trailer to help people get to know your book better.
    On my website, I have a link called books. This will take you to a page where all my book covers are shown. Then from there you can click on the individual covers to take you to information for that particular book.
  4. Share on social media
    Toot that horn. Let people know about your books. Highlight one and write the blurb, or share a review, or post a book trailer. You can create your own hashtags to go along with it to help group it together too.
    For hashtag, I would suggest #title, #authorname, #illustratorname. You can also add something important like #WNDB or #pb or ???.
  5. Get reviews
    Reviews can mean a lot to a books popularity when you use them. It can also help pull you up in the numbers and help get your book noticed by the website you are on, such as Amazon.
    Most people do not charge to review your book. Honestly, I do not see a win situation when you pay for a review, because (to me) you are paying that person for something and expect positive results. But that is up to you. There are plenty of blogs and reviewers out there that do not charge a fee. Some accept pdf files too.
  6. Local bookstores / businesses
    Show your books to your indie book stores. If you are like me and don’t have one close by, show your books to local businesses that carry like minded items in their store. L’s of Ocilla carries my books, although they are not a book store. They do have a few children’s items in their store though. When someone carries your books, give them a shout out too. Help promote them for promoting you!
  7. Have on hand
    Yes, carry your books with you… always. I keep a minimum of one set in my vehicle at all times. You never know when you might run into someone who wants to buy a book. Or who might want to carry your book and would like to see/hold them to get a feel for them.

So having your books handy and talking about your books is a good thing. It may be a hard hurdle to get over, but you’ve earned it. So toot that horn!

Thinking Thursday… Getting Established


Getting Established

Getting established (or re-established) can feel overwhelming. There are so many things we need to do or can do.

  1. Website
  2. Blog
  3. Social Media
  4. Word of Mouth

First thing first though!

Google yourself to see what (or who) is out there.  Check out websites, social media outlets, and blogs to see what is available. You want to become consistent with your name throughout your visual presence if possible. I was very fortunate, I have:

  1. Website
  2. Blog
  3. FaceBook
    (personal) www.facebook.com/traceymcox.1
    (prefessional) www.facebook.com/traceymcox.author
  4. Twitter
    www.twitter.com/traceymcox     or
  5. Pinterest
  6. YouTube
  7. Skype

Just to name a few.  As you can see, I was able to keep my name “Tracey M. Cox” in the search.

What if my name isn’t available?

You can do a variation. [Your Name] writes or [Your Name] author/illustrator. Or do the reverse. Maybe you have a pen name or a quirky name you want people to remember you by. Use that.

Be Consistent! Be, Be Consistent!

Not everyone will be coming from your website. You do have all your links on your website, right? Some people will be searching for you from a search engine. Some can be coming from another link, perhaps from someone else’s blog or website. You want them to recognize you!

Not only should you have your listing match, try matching or similar pictures too. This will help visual recognition! I’m more visual than anything. I can remember a face. Names??? Can be sketchy.   😉   That doesn’t mean you can’t change your pictures. Just remember to do it with all of them. Or have a few grouped together and a few others grouped together. You want people to know it is you when they are searching.

Putting your best foot forward

Your website is your face on the internet. You want to be presentable and allow people to get to know you.

Blogging is a great sound board. It allows you to talk about what you are passionate about, what you stand for, what you want in life. It is a great building block of your platform and branding. Remember to bring your message forward. We all have bad days and you can sound off about it too… just try to do it in a constructive way. Remember people will be reading your posts. Hopefully, some will be agents and/or editors that you will want to present a good image to.

Social Media is a handful! (Zoinks! There goes that constructive whining!!!   😉   ) It can be time consuming and overwhelming. I took it a little at a time. I researched each outlet and gave it a whole-hearted try for at least a week solid before I decided on it. Do I like them all??? NO! Do I use them all? NO! There are a few I’m on, barely. There are some I’m learning to like too. Then there are the ones I wish would be better, because I really like using them.

Word of Mouth is probably one of the best! Really. I think it is, because that means someone else thinks enough about you to pass your name on. To me, it’s one of the best compliments one person can give another. “Oh, so-and-so is really good at (blah). You should check them out!” Or there is “Such-and-such has a new book out called (TITLE). Go read it!” When you say good things about people, they notice.   🙂
While on Social Media, I try to keep it a 1:5 ratio, if not more. Which means for every one promotional post, I will post at least five other posts about somebody else or something else.

Be Friendly

One thing I will say is this…

Don’t constantly talk about yourself!

Talk about others… in a good way!!! Lift each other up. Promote someone who does something really well. Reciprocity RoCkS!

So get out there and let people know you, know what you are about, and who else you like.

Welcome to 2015!

I know many of you are focusing on your New Year’s Resolutions, and I do have a few of my own, but today I like to reflect back on the past year and see where I have grown and what I have accomplished.

  • Platform Building
    My goal for 2014 was to establish myself on the internet and become comfortable with what I stand for. Pre-2014 when you did a search on “Tracey M. Cox” you would find a different author. Now I have at least 2 pages full of articles, videos, social media contact, etc where you can find me. My platform? How to market with little to no money is still in its infancy, but I know the direction it is heading in and I feel confident in where it is going.
  • Better Content
    I’ve done research and feel my output is so much better this year. I hope others learn from me and can pass it forward too. Better content also builds on platform. I hope to be known as a trusted source and someone who loves to bounce ideas off with.
  • Marketing
    THIS was a biggie for me. I’ve learned to toot my own horn. Carry business cards and books with me. Not to be shy about telling others I write AND love it!  🙂  I also am learning the fine line of marketing and being pushy. Nobody wants to be battered over the head and I don’t want to be the person you see and want to run from.  😉
  • Writing
    My writing has improved so much this year. Researching again and again. Critique groups!!!!!!!!! Taking classes. All this, and an open mind, has contributed to my writing this year.
  • Friendships
    I’ve lost some this year. Some by death, others by their choice. I don’t know which is harder. Still, you have to learn to let go.
    I’ve gained some this year. There are some wonderful people I can’t wait to get to know better.
    Then there are the ones who have remained a constant in my life. I’m thankful for all they have given me. I only hope they feel the same about me.

So what is up with this year?

I’ll be keeping up with the same schedule:
Monday – Marketing
Tuesday – Tips
Wednesday – www.
Thursday – Thinking
Friday – Features (when I have some volunteers)
So two to three posts a week.  🙂  I plan on going into better depth and expanding my knowledge on marketing and kidlit. I hope to have a few surprises this year too. *fingers crossed*

What I hope to accomplish past this blog?

  • Learn to use social media more effectively.
  • Get an agent
  • Book contract
  • Work on writing
  • Work on illustrating
  • Books Love & Taters Book Festival (4th annual) to be bigger and better this year
