Today I wanted to highlight something very close to my heart…

The of reading!

I live in South Georgia, USA, where the literacy rate is not as high as the national level. As a writer, it breaks my heart. As a reader, I really don’t understand it. I mean, I {{{LOVE}}}} BOOKS! Why doesn’t everyone???

I know, people struggle with language, reading, misconceptions. People get discouraged, downhearted, and want to give up. BUT I am a firm believer in words being power.

So I decided to try and make a difference in my own community. In 2012, I started a book festival. Books Love & Taters Book Festival to be precise. WHY? Well, I hold it during my towns major festival of The Georgia Sweet Potato Festival. This accomplishes the need to advertise and crowd draw. My little town goes from 4,000 to 10,000+ during that weekend! 8-o  Amazing!  I invite local and state authors to come set up to sell their books, meet the public, have their picture taken, and answer questions people may have.

So far the response has been amazing. Last year, there were six authors (including me) within two booth spaces. This year??? Well, I’m going to need more booth space! I have had about 10 that are hoping to be there!!!!

It is an awesome way for authors to get their name out there, meet other authors, and have fun for the day.

AND this is my FIFTH YEAR! Major milestone!!! If you are in South Georgia, I hope you can make it and say hello!

***If you would like to help support BLTBF you can go to the website and donate***

Thanks everyone!

Monday Marketing: Facebook

facebook

Facebook is one of the biggest social media outlets out there. If you are not marketing, you are missing a valuable opportunity.

Two types of Pages:

There are two types of pages on Facebook: Personal and Business. No, you don’t have to have both. I do though. And here is why…

On my business page I post events I will be attending, festivals where I will be selling my books, author visits to schools, new releases, book trailers, some of my writing journey. I don’t bombard people with all my private life here, unless it overlaps my writing life.
On my personal page you are going to get everything.  Pictures of my children and fur-babies. *yes, my dogs are my furry children*, what is going on in my life, community, how much I miss NY, heart awareness (deal with it),  and anything else I can think of without getting too personal.   🙂

I do promote my books on my personal site too though. Cross-posting can be beneficial, especially if you don’t have some people on your ‘fan’ page, but they are friends with you on Facebook. AND if they are like me, they have a lot of friends. So any posts I do include on my personal page won’t clog up their news feed.

Host an Event

If you want to get special attention for something, try hosting an event. I’ve seen people do give-aways, book launches, raffles, family reunions, all sorts of things.

Are you using Facebook as a promotional tool? Let me know what you are doing and how it is going!

www.Wednesday = The BLUE BOARD forum

The writer’s life can be a lonely life. Most of us work at home or in snipets throughout the day when we get a chance. We build our ideas and write our stories. We revise and rework and sometimes redo the whole story all by ourselves. Very. Very. Solitary.

But it doesn’t have to be. There are groups you can join and people you can meet. This is such an valuable resource.

But what if you live in a rural community and don’t have access to these great people? Turn to the internet. There are so many opportunities out there now. FaceBook has a vast network of different groups. There are forums you can join t0o… outside Social Media.

One of those I want to talk about today is:

THE BLUE BOARDS
http://www.scbwi.org/boards/index.php

The Blue Boards started many moons ago by author Verla Kay. She wanted a place where people could come together, get support, share ideas, and share information. Late last year, SCBWI took over The Blue Boards. It still looks the same, the same people are there, and some great information is to be had. This was one of the first forums I ever ran across 14 years ago. I bookmarked it immediately and have returned and returned and returned to it time and again.

I hope you find it as valuable resource as I have.

Do know of another open forum with great information? Where do you get the most recent information from? What is one website you just can’t live without?
:::LEAVE ME A COMMENT:::
I’d love to hear what you think.
