Marketing… A Home for Your Name

Now that you are beginning to get your game plan down, you will need to have a home to house all your information. The best thing to do? Have a website!

  • But I’m not published!
  • But I don’t have a storefront!
  • But I don’t have any clients!
  • But I don’t have a lot of merchandise!

It doesn’t matter! You NEED a place to call home. You NEED a place to where everyone and anyone can find you. You NEED a place where YOU control the information that is being put out.

Trust me, people will look you up. Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE!, Googles everything this day and age. Do you want them to look you up and see ‘the other you’ that you found in your initial Google search? NO, you want them to find you and all the amazing things you have to offer. So give yourself a placed to call home.

It doesn’t have to be fancy either. A landing page works miracles until you are ready to expand. A simple… Hi! You’ve found my page and this is what I’m up to. With a great profile picture and maybe a few social media links is all you need to get started.

REALLY!

It doesn’t have to be expensive either! WordPress, Weebly, and Wix are a few websites out there that are FREE. Yes, FREE!!! And who doesn’t like freebies? No one, that’s who. They all have a learning curve, but with a bit of time… and maybe some YouTube help… you can get a website up and running.

Don’t forget your name!!! Remember looking around seeing if “you” are available? Try to find something consistent across all platforms and then secure them all. I have done this on everything I knew was out there, whether I use it or not. Then when a new social media comes available, I secure that as well. Do I use them all? No, BUT I do not promote the ones I’m not active on.

Once you have a website secured, you are on your way to building a platform with a solid foundation!

Marketing… In the Beginning

Before you begin marketing, you have to know what you are up against. Or who you are up against.

STEP 1: GOOGLE

Google is your friend, folks. Not only did I google myself when I started marketing, I continue to google myself from time to time. This allows me to see progress and also lets me know if anything else unrelated to me is encroaching on my name.

So what should you Google? Whatever it is you want to be known by. As an author / illustrator is wanted to be known by my name. There are others out there who go by a business name. As I have been marketing, and expanding, I decided to do just that and go under an umbrella name that covers all that I do collectively. Google. Google. Google!

Once you have done your search, you will see what and who you are up against. You can also see their strengths and how you can differentiate yourself from them.

STEP 2: CHECK SOCIAL MEDIA OUTLETS

Now that you know what you want to go by, check the internet and see what is taken. Search high and low…

  • website
  • facebook
  • twitter
  • tumbler
  • instagram
  • snapchat
  • any other outlet you want to be known on

Is your name available across everything that you want to do? If it is AWESOME. I am virtually high-fiving you!!! If not, can you alter your name, even a little, to be consistent?

STEP 3: BE CONSISTENT!

Consistency matters!

Being consistent will get people to recognize you and your content quicker. You need not only to be consistent with your name, but your identifying picture needs to be the same or similar across everything. This can be a profile picture, an icon, or your logo.

But consistency doesn’t stop there. Decide when, where, and what time you will be posting. People will not only recognize you from your name and pictures, but they will also begin to look for your content at certain times.

Now the fun begins!

Now that you’ve done some research, you’ve gotten a game plan, and laid down some foundation… You are ready to begin your marketing journey.

One thing I have stress and will continue to stress is this is not an overnight thing. If you don’t have any major competition, give it at least 3 months to see results. If you are like me and had not only someone else with a lot of content, but is also a well-known author, give yourself a minimum of 6 to 9 months. Remember on either accounts you are moving a mountain of information, whether it’s by dump truck load or at a teaspoon at a time.

The main thing to remember is to give yourself time and don’t give up.

Well, do you own your own business? If you answer yes, then you do! Even if you have big businesses backing you or your products, the marketing that is done in your favor has gone down in recent years.

#MarketingMonday – Reciprocity

Marketing can be daunting to say the least. I mean who wants to sit there and feel like they are bashing others over the head saying things like: “Buy my (insert product)!” “Watch this video!” “Have you seen this?” and yadda yadda on and on. No one, that’s who! It’s the down side of putting your products and yourself out there.

People ain’t got time for all that stuff!

So what can you do? One thing I have found more beneficial than anything else is RECIPROCITY! Or promoting others.

Reciprocity:   a social norm of responding to a positive action with another positive action, rewarding kind action

Yes, talk about other people in your field. Let them know what they say matters. Let them know that you find their post intriguing. Let them know that you think they are important in your field.

HOW can you do this?

  • LIKE what they say.
  • COMMENT on their posts. Ya know, be interactive on social media. ***cough, cough. SOCIAL-IZE! cough, cough***
  • REBLOG, RETWEET, SHARE what they have to say. Spread the word! Give them some link-y love!!!

As you do this you will accomplish several things:

  • Getting great content out into the world.
  • Getting your name noticed by the poster. They notice who does this… trust me!
  • Having your followers trust you for great content.
  • Building your brand.

And guess what happens when you do this regularly??? People will start LIKING your posts. They will start COMMENTING on your posts. They will start SHARING, REBLOGGING, and RETWEETING what you have to say. You will see it come full-circle. Ya know, the whole “what goes around, comes around” kind of thing.  😉   Will it happen over night? No. Building trust and loyalty takes time. You will have to work at it. But it will happen!

There are several ways to find great content too…

  1. READ. Do a search and see what you can find.
  2. FOLLOW others on the interweebs. See what they have to say!
  3. SIGN UP for blog post notifications. This way you will be able to read posts and easily share what you will.
  4. LOOK at what is trending. See what is popular in your area.

I hope this gives you some ideas on how to begin to market yourself (and others).

Marketing Monday… Showing Support

Show Support – Market Yourself by Supporting Others

I know I’ve said this thousands of times, but NO ONE likes to be bonked over the head with a “Buy Me!” attitude. So how can you get your name out there? Show support of others. Yes, talk about them. What have they produced as far as content? Do they give great advice on their blog? What about classes or community awareness?

But you would like to be known better locally too, right? So go to those mom & pop stores, get to know what they carry, and how they come across to their customers and community. What about finding something for your town/city to rally behind? Find a common cause and gather some people together. Make videos, common posts, create hashtags to go with it, and use social media to your benefit.

Chances are, if you start talking and supporting others, they will want to do the same for your. Let’s face it, reciprocity rocks! Another plus is that you will be building a part of your platform. Think of it as a support group. The more people involved the more they can share and communicate with. This will help get your name out there into the public’s eye and social media.
